I'm very gratified to note that this site has seen a vast influx of new visitors
over the past several weeks. To these folks I say "Thank you! Take your
shoes off. Ya'll come back now, y'hear?"
There's also been a light but steady stream of hate mail. This, to me, indicates
I'm doing something right.
Generally, the hate mails all include "your art sucks" and "your
jokes suck". Such comments have all the effect of my cat telling me my taste
in ties leaves much to be desired.
More compelling, though where I really began giggling, is when they insist I
can't do this, that I can't borrow the art style of Gary Larson and *HORRORS!*
place Google ads next to it.
First, if artists weren't legally allowed to imitate others we'd have maybe thirteen
artists in the whole world, tops. And there'd STILL be the occasional lawsuit.
In art school we were specifically instructed to look at other works of art and
told to copy it as best we can in order to understand the whole process. It's
perfectly legal, in fact, to crank out copies of "The Night Watch" until
your fingers turn ultramarine but you can't sign it "Rembrandt" and
expect Sothebys to auction it off.
Second, the various creatures in the original Far Side strip, not to mention
the human characters, aren't copyrighted. None of them have names and very few
of them were drawn the same way each time. I can't legally photocopy the images
and repurpose them but I can use them as inspiration. This is referred to as "an
homage".
Third, what they're really saying to me is "Shut the hell up!" because
they fear my message. That makes me very happy. So the more they complain, the
happier I get.
Finally, as for the Google ads.... Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaa! I realize that
these are the same poor slobs who believed that WMD's were real but they gotta
be kidding me. Anyone who has employed Googads on a marginal site such as this
one knows they function far better as a page counter than as a revenue stream.
But that page counter lets me know you're out there and that's worth all the
money in the world.

PS, Sweding. But
you probably already knew that.
